What kind of city is Fukuoka?

Fukuoka Prefecture is located in the northern part of Kyushu and is the gateway to Kyushu and Asia, serving as a transportation node both domestically and internationally. There are two airports, Fukuoka Airport and Kitakyushu Airport, serving domestic and international destinations.Fukuoka Prefecture is famous for its delicious food. It is also one of the most gourmet cities in Japan, with fresh seafood, high-sugar fruits, and ramen noodles!
Fukuoka is also a city with a long history and abundant nature to enjoy.

I will explain what kind of places they are in the following paragraphs.

1. Dazaifu Temmangu

Address: Fukuoka Prefecture, Dazaifu City, Saifu 4-7-1

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine was built in 919 and enshrines Sugawara Michizane, commonly known as “Tenjin-sama,” the god of learning. There is an anecdote about the steeple plum tree in front of the main shrine. Legend has it that when Sugawara Michizane was left from Kyoto to Dazaifu, he was composing a poem on the plum tree at home, and the plum tree flew up to Dazaifu. The area is famous for its sake offerings, plum wine, and plum trees, which are in full bloom in March.

On the road leading to the shrine, you can also see stalls baking umegae mochi, a cheap and delicious local food!

2. Yatai Food

One of the most famous tourist attractions in Fukuoka is Hakata’s yatai stalls.

More than 200 yatai stalls line the streets of Tenjin, Nakasu and Nagahama area. At night, lanterns are lit and the atmosphere is cozy with steam and aroma. Visitors can enjoy Hakata specialties such as ramen, gyoza, and motsunabe, as well as yakitori, oden, and other dishes at reasonable prices.

Why not enjoy your meal while mingling with other customers and Hakata people in the same yatai?

3. Canal City Hakata

Canal City Hakata was built based on the concept of a metropolitan theater. The rounded space is lined with colorful buildings, including a movie theater, a shopping mall,a playhouse, an amusement facility, etc.

A dynamic fountain show is held on the canal that runs through the center, and events are held daily on the Sun Plaza Stage on the waterfront, where special shows incorporating fountains, lights, music, and 3D light displays can be seen.

Visit when you want to take a break from sightseeing in Hakata or when you want to enjoy shopping.

4. Itoshima

Itoshima is located in the northwestern part of Fukuoka Prefecture and is a spot of rich nature. The coastline is very beautiful, and cafes where you can watch beautiful sunsets, unique craft goods, and spots that look great on SNS are all recommended as places to experience nature.
It is easier to head there by renting a car, but you can also take the JR Chikuhi Line from Hakata Station or Tenjin Station, so you can also travel by train.

5. Ohori Park

Address: Fukuoka, Fukuoka, Chuo, Ohori Park

Ohori Park got its name from the outer moat of Fukuoka Castle, which was built by filling up a part of Hakata Bay. One of the nation’s prominent water vistas, the park scenery features a wild bird forest, a Noh theater, Japanese-style gardens, islands linked by four bridges and a hall that looks like it’s floating on water.

Visit for a light and refreshing feeling of nature in a secluded spot in the big city.

Fukuoka is a fun city

Fukuoka is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Japan. I would like to introduce many other things about Fukuoka, but I will leave the rest for another time.
